The whole thesis of this documentary was to present Nixon through some home movies his subordinates took. What really made the movie though was the audio from the tape recorder that Nixon had installed in the oval office.
Nixon was amazingly insecure. He was constantly asking his subordinates how he did in a speech or public appearance. He would say stuff like "I did great, didn't I?". Then Halderman would say "Yes sir, you sure did great!" It was at the level of a six year old. And he couldn't stand when the press criticized him. As Harry Truman said, "If you can't stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen" or "if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog!"
